Avoid Taking on More

“I know I can handle more.”

“I just need to get through this article/essay/project/painting/[insert to-do-list item here] and then I’ll be able to take on [insert requested add to to-do-list item here.”

There are always more things that we want to do – things that we feel like we need to get done. Just because we feel like we can take on more doesn’t mean that we should – and it also doesn’t mean that we can.

In a list of things that can be done to avoid engaging behaviors, it may seem odd that a list item – that realistically is near the top of the list – is to do less. But the reality is that sometimes, the more that we take on, the less time that we have to really unwind. And the more that we try to accomplish, the less that we’re really able to take care of ourselves.

Putting yourself last will never, in the long term, help you to avoid behaviors.

Recognize that you have limits. Accept that there are times when you can’t do it all – that in addition to not taking on more projects, there may be times when you need help getting through the items that are already on your list. Ask for help when you need it. Know that it’s okay to put off some reading until the morning.

These things allow you to create more balance in your life – and creating balance makes it easier to manage ED-related behaviors.
